Black Lung

written by Jake stilson

Floyd I feel a rumbling in my chest

I’ve got vultures on my right and on my left

I feel a fiery heat on the back of my neck

I don’t know who it is but I swear I smell the devil’s breath

Your cough is catching up with me

Though you died in the 20th century

God knows I don’t want to end up like that

Face turning gray and my lungs turn black

Esther I hear footsteps in the dark

They’ve been following me for days around Veterans Park

What are we going to on down this trail

I’m in the middle of a train bridge and there’s rumbling on the rails

Your cough is catching up with me

Though you died in the 20th century

God knows I don’t want to end up like you

Six in the morning and my face is blue

Peter I see a white horse across the plain

He’s got an earthquake of a gallop and a tornado for a mane

Rider in black is strapped across his back

With a sickle aimed at one more heart attack

Your cough is catching up with me

Though you died in the 20th century

God knows I don’t want to end up like that

Face turning gray and my lungs turn black

God knows I don’t want to end up like that

Face turning gray and my lungs turn black
